Journal Entry of the Mad Man #2

“We have entered the chapel, I must say, the voices in my head have allowed me peace for now. How long, I do not know. As we entered the chapel, the orc woman and our other rogue started ahead of us first. A wise decision, their eyes would prove my useful in the case of traps. Had my mind be as clear as it is now, I wouldn’t have carelessly gone in so bluntly. There were no traps, but rather and interesting pile of goo with odd glyphs floating inside. It still hurts me now when I think back on it. The runes were harmless, so long as no one knew how to read them. I saw the paladin fall into a state of shock from reading them, I thought her a fool at that time. I was later proven wrong as I came to understand the glyphs. A sharp pain passed through my mind as I became slightly disoriented. All I did was laugh at such an event, I’m not sure whether or not to thank my unstable mind for it’s protection, but for now I digress. The glyphs are pure evil, no room for the tongue of good. I imagine this was set up by our previous enemies as to catch trespassers off guard.

After our toying with the ooze, we proceeded forward, discovering a mass hole leading underground. My eyes couldn’t pierce the darkness and the depth of the hole was further than our half-orc could see. After tying some rope, we descended into the dark. Our ranger’s bear stayed above, keeping watch in case anything were to happen. Personally, I would’ve preferred our ranger to have been up there as well, but the past is past.

Down we went, our paladin disliking the immense aura of evil emitting from below. By Selune’s light, I even felt it. We discovered the source, an odd ritualistic alter was created down here. We learned of it’s purpose, some powerful combination of Necromantic and Conjuration magic. The damned thing had the power to convert any being into an undead! We guessed that the giant dog beast must have been created from this, the claw marks on the walls up seem to say so. Another one of our members noticed another section to this underground pit, a room to be exact.

There, we discovered 3 portals. My allies began to debate on how to seal and/or destroy the portals. If it weren’t for them debating, I probably wouldn’t have been able to attain the clear mind I have now. I was annoyed by their lack of tact. These portals were here for a reason, something had created them, and so much we could have learned from them. I pushed forward, ignoring my allies as I began to study the markings on each of the portals. My allies feared the markings, worried that it was the same glyphs as before. I didn’t care. If anything from my services to the army of Silverymoon, it’s told me that attaining information is worth any risk. To my discovery, the markings were not the same as the glyphs in the ooze. In fact, I had discovered the creator of these portals. Apparently the creator was contracted to make these portals 2 years ago. What worries me most is one specific portal made here. Two of the portals only lead to the North and Thay, but the third worries me. It leads to the fifth plane of hell! This gate, it reminds me of the Battle of Hell’s Gate. I pray that this gate is only left over from that war and not a new one. If the latter, I fear we may be taking arms against a familiar foe.

There has been a roar, the bear is alerting us of danger. My allies prepare for battle, quickly rushing up the rope. I have chosen to remain in this underground room, though I am not completely removed from battle. My allies have already received a blessing from my goddess, bolstering their vitality. I look to my daughter, for she plans on joining my companions in arms. I’m proud of her courage, may Selune watch over her."
